You probably have at least one friend who is obsessed with CrossFit. If you do, then you’ve definitely heard about their “box” (aka their gym), their CrossFit buddies, their crazy workouts, and how they can’t wait to get to their next session. And if you’ve never been to a CrossFit gym, you probably don’t understand what the big deal is.
Here is a bit of info for those who are curious about this super new trend in fitness:
CrossFit is fairly new, founded by Greg Glassman in 2000 in Santa Cruz, California. In less than two decades, CrossFit has spread far and wide, with over 13,000 gyms all over the world today.
A program that is designed to improve overall fitness and health, CrossFit mixes various functional movements (from gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and aerobics to name a few) that are all performed at high intensity. You can expect to gain muscle, lose fat, and get in shape in a relatively short amount of time.
In fact, the aim here is to get the most work done in the least amount of time. That’s why CrossFit sessions only last an hour and typically begin with a warm-up, end with stretches, and include deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, handstands, and more! CrossFit can be done by anyone (with a prerequisite of motivation and willingness to put in the effort). Beginners are expected to work out one day and rest one day but as you get more advanced, you’ll probably end up working out 5-6 times a week! The program is the same whether you are a professional athlete or a couch potato looking to get in shape; the only difference is the intensity of the training.
